Cloudflare API: what it can do and how to use it with AI agents
The Cloudflare API lets you manage zones, DNS, cache, firewall, Workers and the other products in your account programmatically. Infrastructure, DevOps and security teams use it. Access is with narrowly scoped API tokens created in the dashboard.
What the Cloudflare API offers
Zones and DNS
Create and edit DNS records and configure zones.
Cache
Purge the cache by URL, tag or whole zone, and manage cache rules.
Security and WAF
Firewall rules, blocks, rate limits and security events.
Workers
Publish and manage code that runs at the edge.
Analytics
Traffic, threat and performance metrics, including through GraphQL.
Certificates
SSL/TLS status and configuration for zones.
How to access the Cloudflare API
- With your company’s credentialsAPI tokens are created in the dashboard with specific permissions and zones. A global key also exists, but it is not recommended for integrations.
- A wrong DNS change or rule can take the site down: keep human approval.
- The API has request limits per user.
- Avoid the global key: prefer scoped tokens with an expiration date.

What an iTeam agent does with the Cloudflare API
Cache purge on request
The marketing team asks in Slack to refresh a page, and the agent purges the cache for that URL only, recording who asked.
DNS change with review
The agent prepares the DNS record change, shows the before and after, and applies it after the infrastructure owner approves.
Spikes and attacks
When it detects an abnormal rise in blocks or traffic, the agent summarizes the source and the rules triggered for the on-call engineer.
Domain inventory
The agent lists zones, certificates and old records that nobody uses, for periodic cleanup.
From the credential to the agent at work, with approval
Create a minimum-scope token
In the Cloudflare dashboard, create a token with only the permissions and zones the agent will use, for example reading analytics and purging cache.
Store it in the iTeam vault
The token stays in the vault. Destructive actions, such as changing DNS or turning off the proxy, are marked for approval.
Test on a secondary zone
Start with a test zone or a low-impact one and follow each action in the audit trail before extending.

Questions about the Cloudflare API
Is the Cloudflare API free?
Yes, the API is also available on the free plan. The features it controls depend on the plan you have.
Do I need to code to use the Cloudflare API with iTeam?
Not necessarily. iTeam reads the API documentation, and the deployment team sets up the allowed actions.
Can the agent touch any zone?
No. The token defines the zones and permissions, and iTeam can also require approval per action.
