Postman API: what you can do and how to use it with AI agents

Postman is the most widely used tool for testing and documenting APIs, and it also has its own API to manage collections, environments, workspaces, mocks and monitors. Development and QA teams that want to automate maintenance of these resources use it. Access is through an API key generated in the account.

What the Postman API offers

Collections

Read, create and update collections of requests.

Environments

Manage environment variables, such as staging and production URLs.

Workspaces

Organize collections and environments by team or project.

Mocks

Simulated servers to test integrations before the real API is ready.

Monitors

Scheduled runs of collections to track the health of APIs.

API specifications

Manage definitions such as OpenAPI inside Postman.

How to access the Postman API

  • With your company’s credentialsUses an API key generated in the Postman account settings, sent in the header of each request.
  • Environment variables can contain secrets: restrict the agent's access.
  • There are API usage limits depending on the Postman plan.
  • Avoid delete permissions on collections and workspaces.

What an iTeam agent does with the Postman API

Collection as documentation for the agent

The agent uses the team's collection as the source of truth for internal endpoints and only calls what is described there.

Monitor follow-up

The agent reads monitor results and opens a ticket with the request that failed and the response received.

Environment updates

When the staging URL changes, the agent updates the variable in the right environments and notifies the team.

Review of outdated collections

The agent compares the collection with the OpenAPI specification and flags endpoints with no example or that were removed.

01

Generate the API key

In the Postman account, create an API key for a technical account with access only to the necessary workspaces.

02

Store it in the iTeam vault

Register the key and define whether the agent only reads collections and monitors or can also edit environments.

03

Start read-only

Run in read mode first and allow edits once the team has validated the agent's reports.

Questions

Questions about the Postman API

Is the Postman API free?

The API is also available on free plans, with usage limits. Paid plans raise those limits and add team features.

Do I need to write code to use the Postman API with iTeam?

Not necessarily. The deployment team sets up the access, and the agent can even use your existing collections to learn your APIs.

Can iTeam import a Postman collection as a tool?

A well-documented collection is an excellent base for iTeam's HTTP tool to learn the endpoints of an internal system.
