MongoDB API: Atlas, drivers and MCP with AI agents
MongoDB is accessed mainly through the official drivers, while Atlas offers the Administration API to manage clusters, users and backups. There is also an official MCP server so agents can query databases and Atlas. Access is through a database user or an Atlas service key.
What the MongoDB API offers
Drivers
Query and write documents with queries and aggregations.
Atlas Administration API
Manage projects, clusters, users and backups.
MCP server
Expose Atlas queries and operations to AI agents.
Atlas Search and Vector Search
Text and vector search over the data.
Change streams
React to changes in collections.
How to access the MongoDB API
- With your company’s credentialsA database username and password or certificate for the drivers. Service accounts or Atlas API keys for the Administration API.
- Start read-only and on a replica, if possible.
- The old Data API was discontinued: use drivers or MCP.
- Mask personal fields to comply with your data-protection law (GDPR, for example).

What an iTeam agent does with the MongoDB API
Ask the database
The operations team asks a question and the agent runs the aggregation on a read replica.
Cluster health
The agent reads Atlas metrics and warns about disk, connections or slow queries.
Support with customer data
The agent looks up the customer record for the support rep, without exposing sensitive fields.
Suggested index
Based on slow queries, the agent proposes indexes for the team to approve.
From the credential to the agent at work, with approval
Create the read-only user
In Atlas, create a database user with a read-only role and allow iTeam's IP.
Store the access and limit what each agent does
The MongoDB access is registered in the iTeam credential vault. You choose which agents use it and what they can do (query collections, read metrics), with a cost ceiling and a log of every call.
Run the pilot with approval
In the pilot, run a simple query on a test collection. The team approves sensitive actions and follows the call history in iTeam.
Ready-made AI teams for this work
Management reporting team
Revenue, margin, pipeline and cash in one report, built from your systems, with a short note on what changed and why.
Data analysis team
Ask which customers stopped buying or which region lost margin. The team writes the SQL, runs it and explains the result.
IT service desk team
Password resets, access requests and how-to questions handled in chat, with Jira updated and approvals in place.
Questions about the MongoDB API
Is the MongoDB API free?
MongoDB Community is free. Atlas has a free tier and paid usage-based plans. The APIs have no cost of their own.
Do I need to write code to use the MongoDB API with iTeam?
Not necessarily. The iTeam deployment team sets up the MongoDB access and each agent's actions from the documentation. IT only releases the credential and reviews the permissions.
Can the agent delete data?
Only if you grant that permission. In iTeam, the default is a read-only user, and any write goes through approval.
