Redis API: What You Can Do and How to Use It with AI Agents
Redis is an in-memory database used as a cache, queue, session store and fast storage. Data is accessed through commands over the Redis protocol, with clients in many languages. The managed Redis Cloud service also offers a REST API for administration. Engineering and infrastructure teams use it.
What the Redis API offers
Keys and data structures
Strings, hashes, lists, sets and sorted sets.
Expiration
Key time to live for caches and sessions.
Streams and Pub/Sub
Event queues and messages between services.
Server information
Memory use, connected clients and statistics.
Redis Cloud management API
Administer subscriptions, databases and users on the managed service.
How to access the Redis API
- With your company’s credentialsData access uses a username and password with access control lists (ACLs), preferably over TLS. The Redis Cloud API uses account and user keys generated in the console.
- Commands that scan all keys can lock up the server: block them for the agent's user.
- Never expose Redis directly to the internet without TLS and authentication.
- Deletions and bulk cleanups should have human approval.

What an iTeam agent does with the Redis API
Cache diagnosis
When the site slows down, the agent checks memory use, hit rate and the largest keys and summarizes them for the on-call engineer.
Backed-up queue
The agent monitors the size of queues and streams and alerts when consumption falls behind.
Invalidation requested by the team
The product team asks to clear the cache for an item and the agent removes only the keys matching that pattern, after approval.
Redis Cloud capacity
The agent tracks memory use of the managed databases and alerts before they reach the plan limit.
From the credential to the agent at work, with approval
Create a restricted ACL user
In Redis, define a user with only the commands and key prefixes the agent may use, such as reading and server information.
Register it in the iTeam vault
The address, username and password or the Redis Cloud keys stay in the vault. Write and delete commands require approval.
Test on a replica or test environment
Validate the queries on a replica or in a test environment before production.
Ready-made AI teams for this work
Management reporting team
Revenue, margin, pipeline and cash in one report, built from your systems, with a short note on what changed and why.
Data analysis team
Ask which customers stopped buying or which region lost margin. The team writes the SQL, runs it and explains the result.
IT service desk team
Password resets, access requests and how-to questions handled in chat, with Jira updated and approvals in place.
Questions about the Redis API
Is the Redis API free?
Redis itself can be used without a license fee depending on the edition. Redis Cloud has a limited free plan and paid plans. Check the license and plan you use.
Do I need to write code to use Redis with iTeam?
Not necessarily. The deployment team sets up access and the allowed commands, and the agent uses the tools defined for each task.
Can the agent delete keys?
Only if you allow it, and preferably with approval each time.
