n8n API: what it can do and how to use it with AI agents

n8n is a workflow automation tool that can run in the cloud or on your company's own server. Its public API lets you manage workflows and executions, and each workflow can expose its own webhook. Technical teams that already have automations and want to trigger them from other systems use it.

What the n8n API offers

Workflows

List, create, activate and deactivate workflows.

Executions

Look up the history and result of executions.

Workflow webhooks

HTTP triggers that start a workflow with the data sent.

Credentials

Manage the credentials used by workflows.

Tags and projects

Organize workflows by label or project.

How to access the n8n API

  • With your company’s credentialsThe public API uses an API key created in the n8n settings. Workflow webhooks can have their own authentication, such as a header or basic auth.
  • Availability of the public API can vary by n8n plan and version.
  • Webhooks without authentication can be triggered by anyone: protect them.
  • On a self-hosted install, keep n8n updated and access restricted.

What an iTeam agent does with the n8n API

Reuse automations you already have

The agent triggers workflows the company already maintains in n8n, such as generating a proposal or syncing a record, from a request in natural language.

Monitor failed executions

The agent looks up failed executions, summarizes the error and tells the workflow owner.

A human step in the flow

When a workflow needs a decision, it calls iTeam, the agent asks the responsible person for approval and returns the answer.

Automation inventory

The agent lists active workflows, workflows with no owner and workflows idle for a long time, for the team to review.

From the credential to the agent at work, with approval

01

Generate the API key and map the webhooks

In n8n, create the API key and identify the webhooks of the workflows the agent may trigger.

02

Store it in the iTeam vault

The key and URLs stay in the vault, and each agent gets the exact list of workflows it can trigger.

03

Test with sample data

Run each workflow with test data, check the response and keep approval for the ones that touch money or customers.

Questions

Questions about the n8n API

Is the n8n API free?

It depends on how n8n is used. On a self-hosted version the cost is the infrastructure, and in the cloud it follows the plan you chose. Check the terms of your edition.

Do I need to code to use the n8n API with iTeam?

Not necessarily. iTeam reads the documentation and the webhook URLs, and the deployment team connects the workflows to the agents.

Why use iTeam if I already have n8n?

n8n runs defined flows. An iTeam agent understands requests, decides which flow to use, asks for approval and talks to people. The two complement each other.
