Google Drive API: what you can do and how to use it with AI agents
The Google Drive API lets you list, upload, download, move and share files and folders, including in shared drives. Developers and IT teams use it to automate document management in Google Workspace. Access is open to any Google Cloud project, with user consent or a service account.
What the Google Drive API offers
Files
Create, upload, download, copy, move and delete files, with metadata.
Folders
Hierarchical organization: create folders and move files between them.
Permissions
Share with people, groups or a domain, with viewer, commenter or editor roles.
Shared drives
Manage team drives and the files inside them.
Changes
Track what changed since the last check, with push notifications.
Export
Convert Google Docs, Sheets and Slides to PDF and Office formats.
How to access the Google Drive API
- Public APIOAuth 2.0 with a Google Cloud project and chosen scopes (read-only, per file or full access). In Workspace, IT can use a service account with domain-wide delegation.
- Prefer narrow scopes (per file or read-only) over full Drive access.
- The API has quotas per project and per user: spread bulk reads over time.
- Documents with personal data should stay out of reach of agents that do not need them.

What an iTeam agent does with the Google Drive API
Signed contract in the right place
The agent receives the signed PDF, identifies the customer and document type and saves it to the customer's folder in the legal drive, with a standard name.
External sharing audit
Every week, the agent lists files in sensitive folders shared with e-mail addresses outside the domain and sends them to IT to review or revoke.
Answers based on the policy folder
When someone asks in Slack about expense reimbursement, the agent reads the current policy in Drive and replies, citing the document.
Onboarding kit
When someone is hired, the agent creates the new employee's folder, copies the templates and shares it with the manager and HR.
From the credential to the agent at work, with approval
Choose the connector and scopes
iTeam uses the native connector with OAuth. If IT prefers, it enables the Drive API in its own Google Cloud project with minimum scopes.
Connect in iTeam and limit by agent
The authorization stays in the vault and each agent gets only the folders and actions it needs, for example read access to the policy folder.
Test with approval
Actions that move, delete or share files start with human approval and are recorded in the audit trail.
Ready-made AI teams that use Google Drive
Accounts payable team
Invoices arrive by e-mail and in shared folders. The team reads them, checks them and lines them up for your approval before the due date.
Bookkeeping team
Transactions are categorized as they come in, receipts are matched, and the month-end close starts with a short list of questions.
Employee HR help desk
Questions about time off, benefits and payslips get a correct answer from your handbook. Sensitive topics go straight to HR.
Contract review team
Every contract is read against your standard terms, risky clauses are marked with the reason, and your lawyer decides.
Questions about the Google Drive API
Is the Google Drive API free?
Generally yes: the Drive API does not charge per call within the project's quotas. Storage follows your Google Workspace or account plan.
Do I need to code to use the Google Drive API with iTeam?
Not necessarily. Google Drive has a ready-made connector, and for specific cases iTeam's HTTP tool reads the documentation and the deployment team sets it up.
Does it work with shared drives?
Yes, the API supports shared drives, as long as the connected account has access to them.
