Mercado Pago API: what you can do and how to use it with AI agents
Mercado Pago is a Brazilian payment service. Its API lets you create charges, query payments, issue refunds, manage subscriptions and receive status-change notifications. Online stores, SaaS companies and businesses that sell by link, Pix or their own checkout use it. Access uses the seller's own account credentials, generated in the developer panel.
What the Mercado Pago API offers
Payments
Create and query payments by card, Pix (Brazil's instant payment system) and boleto (a Brazilian bank slip), with the status of each transaction.
Preferences and checkout
Generate payment links and preferences for Checkout Pro and for custom checkout integrations.
Refunds and cancellations
Full or partial refunds of an approved payment, and cancellation of pending charges.
Subscriptions
Plans and recurring charges for those who sell by monthly fee.
Notifications (webhooks)
Automatic alerts when a payment changes status, such as approved, declined or charged back.
Customers and cards
Buyer records and saved cards to make future purchases easier.
How to access the Mercado Pago API
- With your company’s credentialsThe integration uses an account access token (with separate test and production credentials) generated in the developer panel. To operate on behalf of other sellers, there is an OAuth flow with a registered application.
- Keep test and production credentials apart, and never use production credentials in staging.
- Refunds move money: keep that action under human approval with a ceiling per amount.
- Buyer data is personal data under Brazil's LGPD (the data-protection law): limit what the agent reads and records.

What an iTeam agent does with the Mercado Pago API
Daily collections reconciliation
The finance agent matches approved Mercado Pago payments against ERP orders and flags differences in amount, fee or orders with no payment.
Refund with approval
The support agent prepares the refund for a returned order, shows the amount and reason, and only runs it after the owner approves in WhatsApp or Teams.
Pending payment follow-up
When a Pix or boleto is not paid on time, the agent generates a new link and sends it to the customer, logging each attempt.
Chargeback and decline alert
The agent follows status notifications and warns the team when the decline rate rises or a dispute appears.
From the credential to the agent at work, with approval
Generate the credentials
In the Mercado Pago developer panel, create an application and copy the test and production credentials of the company account.
Store them in the iTeam vault
Register the token in the iTeam vault and define what each agent can do: query payments, generate links or request refunds.
Test with human approval
Run first with the test credentials, and keep refunds and charges under approval until the process is validated.

Questions about the Mercado Pago API
Is the Mercado Pago API free?
Using the API itself usually has no separate charge. What you pay are the fees on each transaction, depending on the payment method and the account plan.
Do I need to write code to use the Mercado Pago API with iTeam?
Not necessarily. iTeam's HTTP tool reads the official documentation and the deployment team sets up the calls. You only provide the credential and the approval rules.
Can the agent create a payment link on its own?
Yes, if you grant that permission. The most common setup is to allow link generation and keep refunds and cancellations under approval.
